The following volunteer roles are regularly available. There may be volunteer opportunities other than those listed below—we would be happy to discuss your skills and interests to see if there’s a volunteer role that would be a good match for you.
Recreation Assistant
Support recreational programs for residents by assisting in activities such as crafts, barbecues, baking, bingo, physical exercises (adapted to fit ability of residents) and accompany them to other areas of MHC to participate in special music events, shows etc.
You may also sign up to be on call for special events scheduled monthly.
Shifts: 10 a.m. ‐ 12 p.m. and 1:30 ‐ 3:30 p.m. Monday to Saturday and some evenings.
Friendly Visitor
(this position requires a criminal record check and an additional orientation)
Give positive encouragement to interim and long-term care residents referred to the Friendly visiting program and help them be engaged throughout their day. Friendly visiting involves one‐on‐one interaction and promotes well‐being of residents who may experience hearing/vision problems or dementia. This role is perfect for those seeking to explore careers in a medical environment.
Shifts: 10 a.m. -12:30 p.m., 1 – 4:30 p.m. and 5 -7:30 p.m. Monday to Sunday
Spiritual Care Programs
Assist in supporting a safe environment for residents by accompanying those wishing to attend church services within MHC. Spiritual care programs may include: Nurturing the Spirit, Bible Study and Rosary Groups.
Shifts: 9:30 ‐ 11:45 a.m., Sunday to Friday
Gift Shop
(this position requires a criminal record check)
Volunteers provide friendly, helpful sales assistance to shop customers. “The Shop” is a revenue‐generating project. Funds raised go back to projects benefiting residents or others at MHC. Full clerical training is provided.
Shifts: 9 a.m. ‐ 7 p.m., seven days a week (three‐hour shifts)
Pub Night
Provides a safe and enjoyable monthly licensed bar service at Misericordia Place for residents and family members to socialize and enjoy scheduled entertainment.
Shifts: 5:30 ‐ 8 p.m., one Tuesday a month
Newspaper / Mail Delivery
Newspapers are provided to residents free of charge and delivered to all floors. This position involves walking and social interactions.
Shifts: 9:30 a.m. ‐ 12 p.m., Monday to Saturday
Clinics
Ambulatory Care: Delivering files, filing, answering phones, taking messages and more.
Shifts: 10 a.m. ‐ 4 p.m., Monday to Friday
Ophthalmology: Assist patients arriving for appointments and direct them to the appropriate clinic.
Shifts: 10 a.m. ‐ 4 p.m., Monday to Friday
Surgical Complex Ambassador
Assist patients arriving for pediatric dental or eye surgery and direct them to the waiting areas. Act as a liaison between families and staff in a busy medical environment.
Shifts: 8 a.m. ‐ 3:30 p.m., Monday to Friday
Surgical Complex PACU-Volunteer
Enhance the patient experience and services provided during the discharge transition from MHC post-Anesthesia Care Unit by offering juice, water, cookies, transport to entry points of the centre etc.
Shifts: 8 a.m. ‐ 12 p.m. and 12 p.m. – 3:30 p.m., Monday to Friday
Ice Water Service
Provide fresh ice water room‐to‐room for residents while taking time for social interaction.
Shifts: 10 a.m. ‐ 12 p.m. and 4 ‐ 7 p.m., Monday to Sunday
Rehabilitation Services
Rehabilitation: Provide support to therapists as they coordinate patients for treatments. Assist clients during rehabilitation treatments such as walking. Placement depends on volunteer experience, training and supervisor’s assignment.
Shifts: 9:45 a.m. ‐ 12:00 p.m., three‐hour shifts
PRIME Program (Rehabilitation, Recreation or Transportation Assistants)
Rehabilitation: Provide support to therapists as they coordinate patients for treatments. Assist clients during rehabilitation treatments such as walking. Placement depends on volunteer experience, training and supervisor’s assignment.
Recreation programing: Support clients as they participate with the various planned activities.
Shifts: 10 a.m. ‐ 12 p.m. and 12 ‐ 3 p.m., Monday to Friday
Patient Registration Ambassador
A position for an early riser! Patients need guidance from Patient Registration to clinics starting at 6:30 a.m. Come enjoy walking indoors and friendly conversations while assisting patients to their appointments.
Shifts: 6:30 ‐ 11 a.m., Monday to Friday
Entry Ambassador
Enhance facility public relations through customer service and warm hospitality; represent Misericordia Health Centre with a friendly, pleasant and courteous manner. An outgoing and positive attitude is welcomed.
Shifts: 9 a.m. ‐ 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday
Patient Interviewer
Supporting Quality Care by collecting survey responses from patients by using the tools provided by Education Services. Full training is provided.
Shifts: 10 a.m. ‐ 12 p.m. and 1:30 – 3:30 p.m., Monday to Friday
