Misericordia Health Centre’s rehabilitation services includes all physiotherapy and occupational therapy within MHC.
Physiotherapy is an evidence-based profession which uses scientifically proven techniques to help many conditions affecting the body. Through an advanced understanding of how the body moves, what keeps it from moving well and how to restore mobility, physiotherapists (PT) manage and prevent physical problems caused by:
- Sport and work-related injuries
- Long periods of inactivity
Occupational therapy is a health profession concerned with promoting health and well-being through occupation by helping clients solve the problems that interfere with their ability to do the things that are important to them. The primary goal of occupational therapists (OT) is to help people participate in the occupations (activities) which give meaning and purpose to their lives through:
- Promotion of independence
- Maximizing functional abilities
- Maintaining safety
- Encouraging quality of life
OT is available to assist residents to maintain their comfort and independence by recommending equipment, changes to the environment or modifying how tasks are done. PT and rehabilitation assistants are available to provide an exercise or walking program for residents. Residents are referred by the nursing staff on the resident care unit.
